Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has told the club’s official website why he signed Takehiro Tomiyasu in the summer transfer window.
Takehiro Tomiyasu joins Arsenal
Premier League club Arsenal completed the signing of Tomiyasu from Bologna on summer transfer deadline day.
As reported by The Sun, the Gunners paid the Italian club £20 million to secure the services of the 22-year-old Japan international defender.
Mikel Arteta’s verdict
Arsenal boss Arteta is over the moon to have signed Tomiyasu, who can play as a right-back or centre-back.
The Spaniard has explained exactly why the 22-year-old is perfect for Arsenal.
Arteta told Arsenal’s official website about signing Tomiyasu: “Again, we followed him for a while.
“We needed a full back who could be very versatile, can play as a centre back, can play in a back three, Tomi has this capacity.
“He is 22 years old but he has some really good experience in Serie A and at international level and with the qualities we are looking for.”
Would Takehiro Tomiyasu make Arsenal better?
Tomiyasu is a very young defender who is only 22 years of age.
However, the Japan international is already very experienced and has been playing regularly for a while.
The 22-year-old was a regular for Bologna for the past two seasons and played for Japan at the Tokyo Olympics this summer.
Tomiyasu has played 23 times for Japan so far in his career.
Arsenal are well stocked in central defence.
You would expect Ben White and Gabriel to be the regular centre-back pairing when both are fit and available.
With Hector Bellerin having left for Real Betis, the right-back position could be where Tomiyasu plays for now.
