What is ‘Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake’?

Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake is an upcoming spin-off series to the wider Adventure Time franchise. The two title characters were originally conceived through drawings from storyboard artist Natasha Allegri.

The response online was so positive that both Fionna and Cake appeared in the main series in six total episodes; Fionna & Cake (season 3), Bad Little Boy (season 5), The Prince Who Wanted Everything (season 6) and Five Short Tables (season 8) and Fionna and Cake and Fionna (season 9).

On August 17th, 2021, Warner Media officially confirmed that HBO Max had ordered one full season for Fionna and Cake, consisting of 10 half-hour episodes.

“Fionna and Cake – with the help of the former Ice King, Simon Petrikov – embark on a multiverse-hopping adventure and journey of self-discovery. All the while a powerful new antagonist determined to track them down and erase them from existence, lurks in the shadows.” – Press Release, via Warner Media.

Speaking on the decision to order a new spin-off title, Billy Wee from HBO Max’s Comedy and Original Animation team said that they are “thrilled to partner with our friends at Cartoon Network Studios to continue innovating and expanding the Adventure Time universe with this world class team.”

Fionna & Cake release date…

  • At the time of writing, neither the production team for Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake nor HBO Max has officially confirmed a release date for season 1.

However, we can make some predictions based on the production schedule of the franchises previous title, Distant Lands.

Distant Lands was first announced in late 2019 before it had to be revived by HBO Max after the series was originally cancelled. The series was split into four unique parts, each releasing between four and six months after the last, starting in June 2020.

Assuming that Fionna and Cake would experience a similar production schedule, fans could expect the new spin-off to premiere by late-Spring 2022.

“Adventure Time’ broke boundaries and was a shining example of how impactful animated storytelling can be. We are excited to partner with HBO Max to carry that tradition on to new heights, lands and magical worlds.” – Sam Register, via Warner Media.

Has any of the voice cast been revealed?

An official cast list for Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake has not been revealed by HBO Max, but we are expecting the three voice actors for the three confirmed characters to reprise their roles.

In previous episodes, Fionna was voiced by Madeleine Martin, an American-Canadian actress who rose to fame through her performance as Rebecca ‘Becca’ Moody in the hit drama series ‘Californication.’

The 28-year-old has also had roles on both the big and small screen, including Ice Age: The Meltdown, Out of the Box, Hemlock Grove and The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel.

Fans can expect Cake to be voice by Roz Ryan, an American actress and comedian who fans may recognise as Amelia Hetebrink from Amen.

Ryan has a wealth of experience in voice acting, with roles in Teen Titans Go, The Marvellous Misadventures of Flapjack, Kim Possible, Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated and The Looney Tunes Show.

Simon Petrikov, also known as the Ice King, was originally voiced by John Kassir in the pilot, before being replaced by Tom Kenny in the main series.

Kenny is a true heavyweight in the acting world, who is best known for voicing SpongeBob SquarePants (as well as Gary, French Narrator and Patchy the Pirate) as well as Yancy Fry from Futurama.

The 59-year-old has also featured in countless iconic series over the past few years, including Final Space, Paradise PD, Solar Opposites, Harley Quinn, Star Trek: Lower Decks, BoJack Horsman and Rick and Morty.
